Moderation and interviewing

Getting the most from your participants
A skilled moderator creates the right environment for participants by establishing a comfortable, open atmosphere where everyone feels able to contribute. They guide the discussion without asking leading questions, use open-ended probes to explore responses in greater depth, and manage time carefully to ensure each topic receives appropriate attention and insight.
Effective moderation of focus groups requires significant experience and sensitivity. A great moderator understands how to prevent dominant personalities from overshadowing others, listens attentively to all viewpoints, and keeps the conversation flowing naturally. They remain enthusiastic and engaged throughout the session, encouraging thoughtful participation and maintaining the group’s focus. This combination of structure, empathy, and curiosity helps generate rich, meaningful insights that strengthen the overall quality of the research.

Benefits of our approach to moderation
Case studies of research which we moderated

B2B research: opinion leaders in news, 22 markets
The client wanted to hear from a large number of respondents who were either news industry professionals or key opinion leaders in 22 countries. Over a five-month period, we successfully screened, recruited and scheduled nearly 500 B2B profiles for a mix of face-to-face and online research.

Focus groups: French-Canadian Québécois speakers
Our client wanted to conduct 90-minute focus groups with French-Canadian individuals who lived in Quebec and who spoke Québécois. We were asked to find a suitably qualified Québécois moderator and a simultaneous translator for the research.
