Survey design and programming

Asking the right questions in quantitative surveys
A quantitative survey is only as strong as the questions it contains. If the wording is ambiguous, the options are leading, or the sequence is poorly structured, the quality and reliability of the data will suffer. Thoughtfully designed questions are essential for capturing accurate, unbiased responses that genuinely reflect participant views.
Most survey platforms offer a wide variety of question types including single-select multiple choice, multi-select multiple choice, open-ended questions that require survey takers to type in a response, ranking questions and slider questions, as well as other more specialist question types for particular purposes. The combination of different question types with option randomisation, answer piping and routing features means that online surveys are a highly flexible way to gather quantitative data.
At FieldworkHub, we create questionnaires that are easy to understand and fun to complete. Our surveys incorporate both visible and invisible features to help combat surevy fraud. We program most quantitative surveys in-house in the UK and our clients have direct access to our programming team. We find that this greatly speeds up the development and review process, and means that we can often make minor changes and improvements in a matter of minutes.
Once a questionnaire is fully tested and signed off, we pilot it with a subset of the sample (typically 10%) and review the responses before proceeding with a full launch.

Case studies of research where we have developed questionnaires

Online survey: HCPs, agency work, UK
We ran quantitative research with healthcare professionals in the UK involving GPs, hospital doctors and nurses from both the public health sector (NHS) and the private health sector. The aim was to understand the target audience’s opinions on agency work and the client’s reputation amongst this group.

Online survey: perceptions on travel insurance, UK
We designed, programmed and managed a survey to assist a UK-based online provider of travel insurance products find out how widely recognised their brand name was, what attributes they associated with the brand and what factors were important to respondents when selecting travel insurance.

Online survey: retraining van drivers on HGVs
A consultancy was helping their client to find ways to overcome a shortage of drivers of large goods vehicles in the UK and looking to improve diversity within the community of HGV drivers. We worked closely with the client to develop a suitable questionnaire and then programmed it as an online survey.
