What is the difference between consumer and business-to-business research?
Put simply, business-to-business (B2B) market research addresses people in their professional capacity, as employees or business owners, while consumer market research addresses them in their personal capacity, as users of products and services outside their work.
Generally speaking, B2B market research is more expensive to conduct than consumer research because the target audience is more narrowly defined (e.g. every household has someone who decides what cleaning products to buy for their home, but only a few of those people also decide what cleaning products to buy for their workplace) and because people tend to place a higher value on the time they spend working than on their leisure time.
However, B2B market research potentially delivers higher value for clients as well, because B2B buyers tend to have much larger budgets than consumers!

What types of business-to-business market research are most popular?
The popular questions which B2B market research can answer include “how do customers typically find out about the kinds of products that we sell?”, “how and where do they buy our products?”, “who is involved in the purchasing decision?”, “how are we perceived vis-à-vis our competitors?”, “what additional features would they like to see in our products?” and “why do customers stop buying from us?”.
In terms of the research methodology, with B2B profiles it’s more common to conduct individual interviews than focus groups. This is partly because of cost – if you are paying a significant amount for an hour of a professional’s time, in most cases it’s preferable to spend the whole hour hearing from them, rather than putting them in a room with five other people and only getting ten minutes of input from them. But the preference for one-on-one interviews is also due in part to the fact that B2B profiles might be more hesitant about opening up on issues and problems in a group environment (particularly if they don’t know much about the other participants) than in a private interview.
Another methodology which is worth considering is a B2B online bulletin board (OBB), which gives participants more flexibility over when they participate and gives you control over how much of the input is kept as a one-to-one conversation with the moderator, and how much is shared with the group.

How do you recruit business-to-business profiles?
