Cultural and economic landscape of India

India is a multilingual and multi-ethnic country in South Asia. It is the seventh-largest country in the world by area. The Indian economy is rapidly growing, along with its population. India recently surpassed China to become the most populous country in the world, with approximately 1.4 billion people calling the country home.

As the nation’s commercial capital, Mumbai is the focus for much of the research, but Delhi, Chennai (formerly Madras), Kolkata (formerly Calcutta) and Bengaluru (formerly Bangalore) are also important centres. FieldworkHub has capabilities in all of these locations.

From 2005 to 2023, India’s services exports grew from $53 billion to $337 billion USD. India recognises 22 official languages and has thousands of dialects. India’s world-renowned film industry is enjoyed world-wide. Known as Bollywood, India produces more films per year than any other nation.

The largest contributor to India’s GDP is the services sector, at 50%, which is growing rapidly. This growth is mostly driven by computer services such as cloud services and AI software. India has also emerged as the leading data centre hub in the Asia-Pacific region. India’s manufacturing and construction sectors have also shown strong growth in recent years following government initiatives and public investment, accounting for 25% of India’s GDP share.

Although slowly decreasing over time, agriculture is still an important component of India’s economic output (16%) and employs almost half of the Indian population. India is the largest producer of milk, jute and pulses, and has the world’s largest cattle population with 303 million animals in 2023. Rice, wheat, sugarcane and cotton are also strong exports.

1

What do I need to know about conducting market research in India?

While there are still huge disparities in wealth in India, there is an expanding middle class which is driving demand for many types of consumer goods and services, thus making India an important location for market research. Much of this research is carried out in English, although it is estimated that English is only spoken by around 10% of the population. For consumer research, it is best to conduct sessions in Hindi.

What guidelines do I need to follow when conducting market research in India?

Although still fairly new, India’s Digital Personal Data Protection Act (APDP Act) must be followed when conducting market research in India. The act only applies to digital personal data, and unlike GDPR, imposes duties on participants to provide authentic information and relies on their consent to process personal data. Children (anyone under 18) require verifiable consent from a parent or guardian for their data to be processed.
