Mexico is a country in North America with a vast history. Once home to ancient civilisations such as the Maya and Aztecs, it is now the tenth most populous country in the world, and home to the largest number of native Spanish speakers. 90% of modern Mexicans are Mestizos, of mixed Native American and Spanish ancestry, influenced by the three centuries of Spanish rule between the 16th and 19th century.
Around 17.5% of Mexico’s population lives in the Distrito Federal around Mexico City (sometimes referred to as México, D. F.) and this is the main centre for market research.
Mexico’s official spoken language is Spanish, but there are also 68 national languages, including indigenous languages. Mexican cuisine is UNESCO-listed, one of the few globally recognised cuisines.
Mexico’s economy is heavily influenced by its neighbour, the US. Industry is the biggest component of the nation’s economy (47%), including automobile production, food processing and mining of natural resources like silver, petroleum, copper and lithium, of which Mexico’s land is rich with.
The USMCA trade agreement facilitated the process of nearshoring, encouraging companies to move their production facilities to Mexico to reduce costs and leverage the country’s proximity to the US. However, the recent tariff increases on imports from Mexico to the USA is a disrupting factor. 43% of Mexico’s GDP comes from services such as transportation, retail and wholesale trade and professional services, and employs roughly 62% of Mexico’s labour force.
