What is qualitative research?

Qualitative market research involves a small number of carefully selected individuals and is used to produce non-quantifiable insights into behaviour, motivations, attitudes and opinions. This contrasts with quantitative market research which aims to produce quantifiable insights, typically by interviewing a representative sample of the target population. Qualitative methodologies include focus groups, bulletin boards and depth interviews while quantitative methodologies include online surveys, telephone surveys and face-to-face surveys.

What are the benefits of qualitative research?

Qualitative market research allows research participants to express their views freely with fewer pre-set constraints than most quantitative research (i.e. they aren’t just ticking boxes in a survey). It is generally considered the best way to unearth deep insights on a particular topic, and the best way to understand people’s feelings and motivations. It can also be a great precursor to quantitative research. For example, if you are trying to decide on a new brand name, qualitative research can help you to brainstorm ideas and develop a list of possible options, after which quantitative research can identify the most popular option amongst your target customers.
